1 “Qara Qoyunlu” (“Black Sheep”) and its rival “Aq Qoyunlu” (“White Sheep”) were confederations of Turkmen nomadic tribes named for the emblem on their standards, both originating as frontier military groups on the fringes of Jalayirid and Timurid authority in eastern Anatolia and Azerbaijan.
2 Qara Yusuf killed the last significant Jalayirid ruler, Ahmad, in 1410 and captured Tabriz and Baghdad, establishing the Qara Qoyunlu as a major regional power across western Iran and Iraq.
3 Jahan Shah, the dynasty's greatest ruler, commissioned the celebrated Blue Mosque (Masjed-e Kabud) in Tabriz, renowned for its dazzling tilework, and briefly extended Qara Qoyunlu control deep into central and southern Iran.
4 The Qara Qoyunlu were destroyed by their long-standing rivals, the Aq Qoyunlu (“White Sheep”) confederation under Uzun Hasan, who killed Jahan Shah in battle in 1467 and defeated his son Hasan Ali the following year, absorbing Qara Qoyunlu territory entirely.
